Who We Are

Welcome

Restoration Anglican Church is a community of people learning to receive the grace of Jesus and practice his way, in and for Birmingham. Come and explore what God is doing in and through this new movement.

Our Values

  • We pursue simplicity within and without, making room for the essentials in our souls and lives.

  • We orient each facet of our lives around the gracious priorities of the King.

  • We discern, embody and convey the truth to a perplexed world.

  • We revel in beauty and participate in its creation for the common good.

  • We receive and extend uncommon welcome and hospitality to all.

  • We cultivate and become the presence of Christ for the sake of our city and beyond.

Our Vision

Restoration is one church that will exist in three overlapping spaces…

Parish

The church “proper” which exists for the sake of worship, community, formation and outreach. This is what we’re forming now.

Land

An in-town place of beauty, rest and re-creation on which the parish and abbey will be built, replete with public gardens, park space, and an urban farm.

Abbey

A space to encourage, embody and teach the historic Christian rhythms of work, prayer and study.

Our Distinctives

Accessibly Anglican

We seek to make the riches of the Anglican way of following Jesus accessible and delightful: from how we design and lead our services, to how we make sense of the Prayer Book, the Christian calendar, and other aspects of an ancient tradition which hold immense relevance and refreshment for our present moment.

Formation Forward

We orient our time, energy and resources around the formation of human beings after the image of God, ushering them into rhythms and practices which move them from belief and belonging to Jesus, to becoming like him across all aspects of their lives.

Thoughtfully Trinitarian

We believe God’s trinitarian nature is best expressed in the local church when the three streams of the global church — catholic, evangelical, and charismatic — are present. At Restoration, this comes through, amid other ways, in our liturgical worship, gospel-centered preaching, and vivifying presence of the Holy Spirit.

Our Leadership

  • Church Planter & Rector

    wshafferman@restorationbhm.org

With deep family roots in Alabama, Will grew up outside Washington, D.C. before meeting his wife Ashley at Furman University. After a four-year stint here in Birmingham (her hometown), they moved back to Washington for another six where Will studied and worked at a flagship Anglican church, and Ashley trained in pediatrics. They returned to the Magic City in 2020 and began planting Restoration in 2022 while raising two little girls, Caroline and Emily. Will loves to be on a golf course, cheer for FC Barcelona, and spend time in solitude and silence.

  • Musical Worship Leader

Originally from Gadsden, AL, Andrew began his education at UAB, where he fell in love with Birmingham. After transferring to Jacksonvile State University, he met his wife Molly and began leading worship for Reformed University Fellowship and Hope Community Church. After graduation they returned to Birmingham, where Andrew has since worked for Shipt downtown, and Molly in nursing at St. Vincent’s. In 2022 they welcomed their first son Wesley into the world. When Andrew is not leading worship on Sundays you can find him in a local coffee shop or playing with his band around town.
